Explorers, being for older children, have more freedom and responsibility in their activities. However, the general policy is that they should focus on achieving the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. These are approximately equivalent to the Chief Scout’s Platinum Award, the Diamond Award, and the Queens Scout Award, which should be achieved at the same time.
Explorers are managed at District level. At the current time there are four Explorer units, which are located at Chalfont St Giles, 2nd Amersham Common, Chesham Bois, and 2nd Amersham on the Hill (our group).
When a Scout is ready to go to Explorers, they can join any of the ‘units’ in the district. Similarly, Scouts from other troops, including Guide Groups can come to ‘our’ Unit.
It is expected that Scouts will move up to Explorers the term after their 14th birthday. The actual time of moving will be determined by a combination of the Scout Leader, the Explorer leader, and the Scout. It will depend on readiness of the Scout to move on; having for instance achieved certain awards, or completed a particular activity. There must also be ‘room’ within the Unit to accept the Scout.
